Sara Jayne Stanes OBE is CEO of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and Chefs Adopt a School; food writer, author of award winning BOOK ‘Chocolate - the Definitive Guide’ and also ‘Chocolate’. Sara is also Chairman of the Academy of Chocolate.

As a food writer and chocolate truffle maker, Sara’s love affair with fine chocolate has endured for the past 25 years, evangelising about it whenever she can and to whomever will listen! She is passionate about provenance of ingredients, origins, varieties, breeds, organics, etc., and particularly CHOCOLATE.

Sara regularly broadcasts and writes about chocolate and gives lectures, seminars and tastings.

She has written 'Chocolate - the Definitive Guide' presently undergoing its third major update - with a foreword by Michel Roux OBE. It is the story of three and a half thousand years of cocoa to chocolate, from pod to palate: its history, geography, social and religious implications, its nutritional values, how-to-taste, wines pairings, 'dos and don'ts and recipes. ‘Chocolate – the Definitive Guide’ won the Guild of Food Writers Jeremy Round Award in 2000.

Her second book ‘Chocolate’, published by Ryland, Peters and Small was published in October 2005 and sold over 40,000 copies worldwide.

Sara is a campaigner to persuade people to ‘look beyond the label’ and she and a group of fellow chocolate lovers started an Academy of Chocolate in 2005. Its aims are to promote the story of chocolate and to ensure that everyone knows the difference between ‘real’ chocolate and chocolate flavoured confectionery. It is a long journey from pod to palate! Equally, the Academy of Chocolate promotes the transparent sourcing of cocoa beans from the plantations and their production in socially fair and environmentally undamaging conditions.

Sara was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June of 2007; made an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Cooks in 2006; awarded the Special Award in the 2011 Catey Awards; received an Honorary Doctorate from University of West London in March 2013.

Sara lives in Clapham, London with her chocolate loving, wine merchant husband, Richard and their Battersea dog Montezuma.
